I was heading north through Peru from Bolivia and had one day to catch my flight. There was a major protest south of Lima blocking the Pan American Highway and the only route into the city. The only alternative was backtracking 6 hours and taking the long mountain route which was a guarantee of missing my flight. I asked around and nobody seemed to be doing anything about it. Travelers were stuck waiting for days and doing nothing but complain about it. This was not an option as far as I was concerned. I had 27 hours to get 24 hours north or I would miss my flight. I recruited 2 other travelers that seemed as rushed as I was, and we decided to at least get close enough to see how bad the situation had turned. On closer inspection, it was clear that this was a serious matter. We drove past miles of backed up traffic and police barricades. The Police warned us not to go in, as did some of the locals who were waiting it out. After half an hour debate, I decided that I would go through, and the English woman and Israeli gent, however hesitant, decided they would join me. Here’s how it went down…

That video was a lot of fun to watch…not very often that somebody takes the risk of encountering an angry mob, who may become hostile. I would take the risk myself, but I know the majority wouldn’t – this fear would exacerbate their underlining worries and result is a no-go.
I’ve got to say, that super hero thing in the middle could have gone horribly wrong, but in fact, I p***ed myself laughing.
Good stuff mate! Without overcoming risk and fear, we’d never move forward and never achieve anything. Because if it’s easy, it’s often not worth doing.
